Smart Farming Technologies: The Future of Agriculture

The agriculture of tomorrow focuses on innovative technologies and intelligent networking – a significant step towards the electrification of agricultural machinery and equipment. With our innovative connectivity solutions, we support farmers in making their work processes more efficient and using resources in a targeted manner. Together, we are setting the foundation for sustainable, productive and future-proof intelligent agriculture.

Industry - Agriculture technology - Smart Farming landscape

Smart Farming refers to the digitalisation and automation of agricultural processes through the targeted use of modern technologies. Sensors, networked machines, artificial intelligence and data analysis enable farmers to run their businesses more efficiently, sustainably and in a more resource-efficient manner. The aim is to increase yields, optimise resource use and reduce environmental impact at the same time.

A key component for the future of smart farming is the electrification of agricultural equipment. Electrically powered machines are not only more environmentally friendly but also offer the possibility of working more precisely and flexibly. At the same time, data interfaces are becoming increasingly important: they enable seamless communication between different machines, sensors, and control systems. This allows data to be collected and evaluated in real time and used to optimise workflows.

HARTING solutions for Smart Farming

Reliable connectors and high-quality cables are essential for this continuous networking in agriculture to function smoothly. They form the backbone of the digital infrastructure and ensure secure data and energy transmission – even under demanding conditions in the field. As a leading technology company, HARTING not only offers innovative connector solutions for agriculture, but is also actively involved in the standardisation of interfaces. In this way, HARTING is laying the foundation for future-proof, efficient and networked agriculture.

Advantages of electric motors

Electric motors offer numerous advantages compared to hydraulic devices in agricultural machinery. Here are some of the most important advantages:

Energy efficiency: Electric motors are generally more efficient compared hydraulic systems. They convert a higher proportion of electrical energy directly into mechanical energy, thereby reducing energy consumption.
Ease of maintenance: Electric drive systems have fewer moving parts compared hydraulic systems, resulting in lower maintenance costs. There are fewer components that wear out or need to be replaced, which reduces operating costs.
Precision and controllability: Electric motors enable more precise control of machines and their functions. This is particularly advantageous in applications that require fine adjustment, such as fertiliser dosing or the precise control of attachments.
Reduced heat generation: Electric motors generate less heat compared to hydraulic systems, which increases efficiency and reduces the risk of overheating and related problems.
Environmental friendliness: When powered by renewable energy sources, electric drives can be more environmentally friendly compared to hydraulic systems, which are based on fossil fuels. This contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture.
Energy efficiency: Electric motors are generally more efficient compared hydraulic systems. They convert a higher proportion of electrical energy directly into mechanical energy, thereby reducing energy consumption.
Better efficiency with changing loads: Electric drives can dynamically adjust their power output to better accommodate varying loads. This is useful in applications with varying requirements, such as ploughing or sowing.
Compact design: Electric motors often take up less space compared to hydraulic systems, allowing for more flexibility in machine design. This can help make machines lighter and more manoeuvrable.
Integration of modern technologies: Electric drives can be more easily integrated with modern technologies such as sensors and automation systems, resulting in higher efficiency and better results.

What our customers say:

Precision farming with AgXeed

With our connectivity solutions, we support farmers in optimising both their workflows and their use of resources. How? With the help of autonomous technologies such as those from AgXeed. The company's fully autonomous AgBot robots enable farmers to significantly increase their efficiency. The bots work continuously for up to 23 hours. They use intelligent algorithms to optimise the use of energy and resources such as energy, fertiliser, water and seeds.

Monitoring and Display Systems from ANEDO

ANEDO is a leading OEM provider specializing in innovative monitoring and display systems for agricultural technology. With ANEDO’s solutions, both new and existing agricultural machines can be effectively digitalised. The systems offer a wide range of functionalities, such as connecting cameras for process or environmental monitoring with or without AI support as well as intuitive machine operation via supplied software solutions.

A key aspect of ongoing digitalisation is the use of HSI (High Speed ISOBUS) as the new communication standard in agricultural technology. HSI is based on Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) technology and, thanks to increased transmission speeds, enables significantly higher data rates. HARTING supports ANEDO with suitable SPE connectivity in the form of the internationally standardised T1 Industrial interface according to IEC 63171-6. This gives users the choice between a D-coded interface for conventional Ethernet or Single Pair Ethernet.

ANEDO’s "display" product platform allows agricultural equipment manufacturers to quickly and easily configure their individual variant—a combination of “customised off the shelf”: tailored to the customer’s needs and yet quickly available without lengthy development times. Thanks to the SPE interface, the platform is already HSI-ready and thus meets the requirements of the next generation of cross-manufacturer communication between tractor and implement—an important contribution to future-proofing.

In addition to today’s ISOBUS functionalities, HSI will also enable the integration of digital camera systems. Through image processing with and without AI, entirely new sensory possibilities are opening up, allowing for innovative control and automation in agriculture technology. ANEDO is also actively involved in the standardisation of High Speed ISOBUS leading relevant working groups within the Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation (AEF).
